2023 Ketchum Prize Awarded to Doug Shadel for Outstanding Service and Research on Protecting Consumers
The FINRA Investor Education Foundation (FINRA Foundation) has awarded Doug Shadel, Ph.D., the 2023 Ketchum Prize—its highest honor—in recognition of his outstanding work to protect consumers and his extensive research on financial fraud over the past 30 years. Until his recent retirement, Shadel was the strategy director for the AARP’s Fraud Watch Network. He also developed fraud education curriculum that has been used throughout the U.S. for more than a decade. His work over the years includes investigating fraud, conducting studies on persuasion tactics, risk factors associated with victimization, the role of emotion in scam victimization, and the efficacy of forewarning messages. He was a special assistant attorney general and fraud investigator in the Washington State Office of the Attorney General prior to leading AARP Washington State. The prize was created to honor Richard “Rick” Ketchum, FINRA’s former chairman and CEO, who was a long-time advocate for protecting families from economic harm. Previous recipients of the award include Cesar Escalante, Shawn Spruce, Olivia S. Mitchell, Annamaria Lusardi, Michael Morris, and Michael Collins.
