EEOC Appoints Sivaram Ghorakavi as Deputy CIO & Chief AI Officer

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has appointed Sivaram Ghorakavi to the senior leadership positions of Deputy Chief Information Officer and Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, effective immediately.

As Deputy CIO, Ghorakavi will manage the EEOC's daily IT operations and provide strategic direction on technology projects and partnerships. In the newly created Chief AI Officer role, he will coordinate the agency's efforts around artificial intelligence in accordance with the President's executive order on trustworthy AI development.

"Siva's appointment reflects our confidence in his demonstrated abilities and experience to help lead our agency in both digital transformation and adapting to emerging technologies," said EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows.

Ghorakavi emphasized his goal of ensuring AI and other technologies are leveraged appropriately to enhance the EEOC's mission of ensuring workplace protections and equal employment opportunities.

"The success of this role depends on helping people understand both the benefits and risks of using technology, including AI, to ensure it is used in the right places at the right time and in the right amounts," he stated.

The EEOC has prioritized scrutinizing potential employment discrimination through AI and algorithms as part of its enforcement efforts. Ghorakavi's hire as the first Chief AI Officer signifies the agency's commitment to that initiative.

Ghorakavi joins the EEOC after 15 years in federal IT roles, most recently as chief architect and data strategist at the National Labor Relations Board. He previously served as an IT portfolio manager at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The dual appointment puts Ghorakavi in a key position to drive the EEOC's digital strategy and responsible adoption of AI technologies aligned with its equal opportunity mission and workplace discrimination enforcement.
