In January 2023, Asif Iqbal Khan, a 42-year-old former RAC employee, was fined £5,000 for stealing data from victims of road traffic incidents. The incident came to light when 21 complaints were received from suspicious drivers who had received calls from claims management companies following accidents in which the RAC had assisted. A search warrant executed by the ICO found two phones belonging to Mr Khan with photos of data relating to over one hundred road incidents. Stephen Eckersley, ICO Director of Investigations, commented on the case, saying that those who steal data will be caught and justice will be served.
